AI Search / AEO / GEO
Published 2026-09-23
AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) is the practice of structuring and writing content so that answer engines — Google AI Overviews, voice assistants, ChatGPT, Perplexity — select your content as the source when answering a user question. It is closely related to SEO but focuses on being chosen as the answer rather than ranking as a link.
SEO asks: "How do I rank higher in search results?" AEO asks: "How do I get my content selected as the answer?" The difference matters because answer engines do not return a list of links — they generate a response and may cite sources. Being cited builds authority and visibility even without a traditional click. AEO is not a replacement for SEO. It is a layer on top of SEO. You still need strong technical SEO, quality content, and authority. AEO adds answer-focused structure and clarity on top of that foundation.
Content that gets selected as answers tends to: - **Answer the question directly in the first paragraph** — Then elaborate below. - **Use question-format headings** — "How much does X cost?" rather than "Pricing overview". - **Be concise and factual** — Answer engines prefer specific, quotable answers over long, discursive content. - **Use structured data (FAQ, HowTo, Article schema)** — This helps machines understand what your content answers. - **Cover one question per page or section** — Mixing multiple unrelated topics dilutes clarity. - **Include entities and specifics** — Named places, numbers, dates, and defined terms are easier for AI to extract and cite.
These terms describe overlapping practices: - **SEO** — optimising for traditional search result rankings - **AEO** — optimising to be selected as an answer by AI and voice tools - **GEO** — optimising for generative engine visibility (a broader term that includes AEO) All three share the same foundation: useful, well-structured, technically accessible content. The differences are in emphasis — SEO on ranking, AEO on answering, GEO on generative visibility.
